Phuket, on the Andaman coast, is dry and calm from roughly November to April. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from May to October, with July among the wettest months. Koh Samui, over in the Gulf of Thailand, is broadly dry from January through September, and its wettest stretch arrives late, from October into December, so November is usually the month to avoid there.
That split makes the decision for you more often than not. If you are travelling in the European summer, Samui is the safer bet, because in July Phuket typically records around double Samui’s rainfall. If you are travelling around Christmas, Phuket is in its best weather, and priced accordingly.

- Whether the beach is swimmable in your month. Red flags on Phuket’s west coast beaches during the monsoon are serious, and rip currents cause drownings every year.
- Hillside or flat. Several Phuket villa resorts are built into slopes. Check buggy service if stairs are an issue.
- Adults-only policies. The Shore at Katathani will not accept under-18s, and several Samui properties have similar rules.
